For Saul to step up and want to protect Alina right from the start says a lot about his character. For Alina to suffer he heartache of losing her whole family right down to the love of her life was horrible. I will never understand how anyone can do anything like this to other human beings no matter how many stories I read on this subject. The things they all had to deal with from the very first chapter right up to the last one.

The characters in this story were amazing. Overall, a great read and highly recommend.

Don't give me everything oh, except this very important piece. It's hard to explain without giving spoilers. It came about “off page” and therefore was a surprise. I really enjoyed the historical part of the novel however I took off one star because the reveal of the connection between the two tales almost felt like Deus ex Machina. I liked the balancing act between the autistic son and the stroke-affected family member. Her writing reminds me of Jodi Picoult in many respects. It says a lot about Kelly Rimmer's talent that I liked this novel as much as I did. In fact, the flap text hardly mentions the modern day half of the story, so when I first started reading I was a bit confused. Those blurbs that begin 'The epic saga spanning six generations…”, those books are not for me. I normally do not enjoy novels that intertwine two tales from different time periods, as happens so often in the WWII genre.
